First of all, apologies to nevermore999 for posting this from her LJ without asking first.

However, I really thought it was important enough to post.

Bill Willingham came in the panel, and ohmygod this really stupid guy bought up Steph, saying her death was poignant and he didn't think they should have bought her back because it was so important Batman kicked her to the curb and Leslie Thompkins (yes, he apparently liked THAT too) and Mom got all uncomfortable next to me...to Willingham's credit, he shut the guy down, saying the death was never his plan and he actually argued for Steph to live. Sattler said he wasn't around for it, and that the fans are really into Steph, and that he thinks it's important they redeemed Leslie Thompkins. Then Willingham had to ruin everything and say, and I swear to God this is a direct quote "I wanted to gun down those girls who kept asking about the (Steph's) memorial case."

My jaw just dropped open. I knew from interviews and shit that Willingham was an asshole- and I'm sorry, he is, for mocking people at panels, and mocking men for daring to cry over a comic book death- but that is just a creepy as fuck thing to say. I raised my hand and I wanted to say "Willingham, you're an asshole" but instead I just told him a) I hated Stephanie's death and b) You shouldn't want to gun people down for being passionate about a character.

Backpedaling time! No, see, those silly girls were just distracting from important issues at panels by asking the same question over and over again, andandand they just don't understanf how the comics industry works and then, I swear to god, he word for word said the "being hated is almost as good" quote. He DID. He and Sattler telled me that when fans hate a story, it's almost as good as if they love it, because at least they care.

So let me just lift the Internet veil for a minute. I am/was a journalist and I used to be a crime/court reporter. In my four years working for three different Canadian newspapers, I reported on a lot of incidents of violence against women. One of those was a four-part series on the high rate of domestic violence in a small community, for which I was nominated for a National Newspaper Award. So trust me when I say I have seen what violence against women does and how important a topic like this is to me.
So yeah, this comment disturbs me on many levels. It is truly an indefensible comment and the fact that it was made in a public venue with little discourse is disturbing. Serious props to nevermore999 for standing up to Willingham and pointing out his incredibly horrific and misogynistic comment. Young impressionable boys buy these comics and that writers who write them actually think these things and then say them outloud in a public venue is shocking to say the very least.

Jason being badass
Holy crap, this took forever to scan.

But totally worth it!

OK. Here we go. Six pages. In which: Talia bitchslaps Jason, Ra's tells us what Talia's motive is, Ra's tells us what his motive is and Talia and Jason sit on a cliff and talk. Very touching moment.

Scans under the cut!Collapse )

It happened because it was the 80s!

This is a cute little back-up story from Batman Annual 12. Jason's in 7th Grade. And some of his classmates are -- gasp-- cheating cheaters! Sadly, I don't think I can post this on Scans_Daily because of posting limits.

This is Thriller, thriller night...

I wonder if Jason knows the Thriller dance...Collapse )

Dear DC Editors and Judd Winick

wicked
Here's the letter theminiwheat and I wrote to DC editors and Judd Winick. We actually sent it off snail mail to hopefully get our point across even more, since snail mail is so outmoded. Here's the address for anyone who wants to send a letter to them for any reason. I think the next one I write will be to get them to reunite the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Feel free to discuss!

DC Comics

Dear DC editors:

We are writing to you about Jason Todd. Both of the authors of this letter adore the character. We think he’s great as an antagonistic anti-hero and there is so much potential for amazing stories about him.

What concerns us both is this drive to push Jason to become a villain, particularly in the wake of Battle for the Cowl. Grant Morrison’s lovely Revenge of the Red Hood arc seems to have brought Jason back towards the grey anti-hero area and we champion that because there are simply too little characters in DC like that. There are enough gun-toting villains that go up against the Batfamily. You must be aware that the vast majority of both Jason and Batman fans did NOT like the “irredeemable” direction he was going in in the wake of Battle for the Cowl simply from the online sentiment. On the other hand, what is interesting is to see someone like Jason be antagonistic towards the Batfamily, but at times work with them, such as in Outsiders 44 and 45, where he gives Dick Grayson information to save a man’s life.

First off, I'm going to recommend people pick up this series that's coming out in July:

From DCU's The Source here:

Buy this series! More info...Collapse )

Fabian Nicieza is an awesome writer who wrote Cable and Deadpool and will be taking over writing Red Robin. He answered some questions on Jason, Tim and Steph.

Here they are. The final three questions were asked by me:

Q. Just wondering,...how long have you been a fan of Tim Drake/Wayne (which is right to you by the way)?
Fabian Nicieza answers q"s about Tim, Steph and Jason. Read this! :-)Collapse )

First look at Under the Red Hood

Part two...

I just have to say... YES. The bag of heads scene and the rocket launcher scene appear to be making it in. Hell yeah!!!
Outlaw's amazing rack

There's going to be an animated Batman DVD coming out in the summer. It's called Under the Hood. From the LA Times blog: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/02/new-batman-dvd-to-peek-out-from-under-the-red-hood.html

Written by Judd Winick and based on his 2005 Batman comics story line, it's Batman versus another vigilante, Red Hood, who doesn't mind cleaning up Gotham by leaving dead bodies in his wake. Animated guru Bruce Timm exec produces this pretty violent look into crime on the streets, and it's directed by "Superman Doomsday" co-director Brandon Vietti, with a cavalcade of stars as voice talent. It all starts with Bruce Greenwood ("Star Trek") as Batman, then continues with "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles as Red Hood, Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother") as Nightwing, John DiMaggio ("Futurama") as the Joker and Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter films) as Ra's Al Ghul.
This was one of the most popular story lines to come out of Batman in recent history.

Jason Isaacs, aka Lucius Malfoy, as Ra's? Awesome.
Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing? It's like the most perfect choice possible.
And Jensen Ackles has a hot, hot, HOT voice. And is also hot.
Yes. I agree with all of these choices.

SCREENCAP.

And now, for theminiwheat here's a little history lesson, kiddies. So sit back, relax and enjoy.

YEAH BITCHES.

-tt- BnR 4-6 thoughts

awesome reporter LOIS
I'm going to blame itllcometome for this. We've been talking about the current arc of Batman and Robin, issues 4-6 via messages and my thoughts are too long to include in a message.

SO here you go, girl!

First of all, let me say, I read Batman RIP. It was boring, so I don't know what all these fanboys are talking about, it being so great. Then again, some people think Grant Morrison's a genius and should be knighted. I don't really think that at all, I would say sometimes the guy can be totally off his rocker and other times his stuff is great.

1. Red Hood's new snazzy costume: itllcometome said between a conversation we had:
The Red Hood uniform is terrible! The hood looks more like a helmet and he's wearing a white shirt with a cape. The jacket was perfect as is. However the idea of Jason drawing up those new duds and taking it to a tailor is hilarious. This scourge needs a makeover!
One every badass needs leather. Two, the kid looked great. Three, that high collered cape mess? What the hell does that do? As if that lipstick tube they stuffed his head into doesn't inhibit his range of motion already. He drops his leather jacket and hood for a long sleeved jersey with a skull on it? That gonna strike fear into the hearts of men?

leather badass vs. caped badass costumeCollapse )

2. Sidekick: How ironic is it for Jason to have a sidekick? Especially after having "talked" (kidnapped, fought) to Mia Dearden (the cool Speedy!) about the perils of sidekickdom, child endangerment, the fact that they were both from the street and were taken in by wealthy men, etc. Even in BnR 5, he tells Damian not to expect "job security" with the Robin gig.

But yet, it totally works. One, Sasha/Scarlet's father was a low-level criminal, working for Prof Pyg. Her mother left them early on, it seems. This somewhat mirrors Jason's own backstory in that his father worked for a criminal and his birth mother abandoned him.

She's also been disfigured, having been forced to wear a glued-on-to her face "Dollotron" mask by Pyg. Jason seems to have this thing for damsels in distress. The women being raped by Garzonas, a diplomat's son who was a rapist and could get off on diplomatic immunity; the fact that he was willing to save his mother -- who had abandoned and betrayed him to the Joker ; his upset over the death of Duela Dent and now taking in Scarlet.

Granted, on one hand she seems so frail, unsure and emotionally damaged, on the other she reminds me a little bit of Carrie Kelly from Dark Knight Returns. Particularly regarding the fact that both she and Carrie both had little training before hand and both represent a call to arms (Jason's call to do something now that Batman is gone, plus his call to rid Gotham of crime for good). Haunting Scarlet & Jason sceneCollapse )

3. The Red Hair issue.

You know what? It's just so ridiculous. This is pretty much where I think Morrison went off his rocker.
Ginger Todd!Collapse )

4. Damian. I love that little shit. That's all.

5. Then there's this end scene, more Killing Joke references.

Original:

Batman and Robin 6

Jason copies Joker practically right down to the body language/ facial expressions.

Anyways. Thoughts on this: This was incredibly meta. So much of what Jason did in this was meta: phone polls, phone calls....

What Morrison has Jason say in BnR 6: More or less it's like Morrison himself is talking about the fickle fandom that didn't want to to give the second Robin a chance because he wasn't the first Robin. It didn't matter that the second Robin was actually a more interesting character - he was a usurper. Like Jason says... he never stood a chance. I felt like Jason was going to pull a Deadpool in that scene and start talking about who writes him best or something.

Jason says he tried to be like Dick Grayson, the original Robin. Interestingly enough, that's how he was first written: as a Dick Grayson clone, right down to the backstory. He was an acrobat, cheerful, and both his parents were killed. When he was changed to be different, a street kid whose (adoptive) mother was deceased (drug overdose) and father was killed by Two-Face. He was rash and angry, probably no more so than an average teenager, and on top of that someone who survived the streets.

When Jason's talking about this cruel world, I get the sense that he's not just talking about Gotham: he's talking about the fans that wanted him killed off. The fans that would kill off a teen just to see if they could do it; or to see the Joker, the bad guy get the upper hand over the good guy for once. And probably those fans still out there that want to see him dead: his death is the greatest triumph Batman's greatest villain had over him.

And how sick is that? When fans talk about wanting to have his head bashed in with a crowbar once again? Seems like Morrison is talking about the fandom itself.

See why I had to post this rather than write a message? Holy crap, this is long.

Allons-y!

awesome reporter LOIS
Well.

Since I may not be in the media industry much longer, I guess I don't really have much to post about it. (Other than I miss it terribly and why-oh-why do things like the former Ontario Attorney General getting arrested have to happen when I'm NOT AT A NEWSPAPER.)

In other news...

A couple of weeks ago, I went to FanExpo in Toronto. That was my first time at a ComicCon. Just Ryan and I went coz we're cool like that and I was super sad I missed my friend Grant, who had a table in Artist's Alley, but was mc'ing a wedding that day.

BUT I got to meet the super awesomely nice Ty Templeton, who drew a fabulously lovely Joker/Harley sketch for me and we chatted about how popular the pairing is (It's by far the most requested sketch, says Ty) and he said to say Hello to the awesome princessebee , for whom he included her real name in a story about Harley Quinn.

Ultra cute Ty Templeton JHQ sketchCollapse )

Also, I just accepted to go back to school to become a paralegal. That means I can't dole out any legal advice, chumps, but I get to go through all kinds of court files, which... well, I don't know if you've ever read a search warrant before, but it gives me goosebumps. Stuff that happens in court is so salacious sometimes, I mean you can't make this stuff up. And I've already been a court reporter so... HELLO MATCH.

And I had my birthday on Saturday. Thanks irish_spectre, itllcometome and captain_clown for the birthday wishes. I went to Toronto for the big day and wanted to just go out dancing to a bar we used to frequent during university years. So we get there and there's a red carpet leading to the door, a lady with a list and a bunch of paparazzi. Oh yeah! Turns out it's rented out for a private party for the Toronto International Film Fest.

So I  give her a big smile, tell her it's my birthday, she lets us in, we get free drink tickets and she tells us: "It's gonna be awesome. It's the afterparty for the movie, Suck."

Cue dramatic eye rolling/cruel irony music coz holy crap, did the party ever suck. They have a huge place rented out and everyone is standing around schmoozing, talking really loudly while really loud music is playing. Thank God we were already trashed, but I swear, it very nearly killed my buzz.

What else? Well, I'm totally pimping the Twitterverse.

This is an awesome Deadpool. Seriously. Check him out. I laugh EVERY TIME. But also he does *emo* Wade, too. Really.
Jason Todd, who's rp'er got me into the character and now I spend my money on more comics, damn you!
A very adorable Spoiler and a Tim Drake and an ultra HILARIOUS Bart Allen who even writes as though he has ADD. There are lots of other good rp'ers, and I'll add them next round.
